What is the most common source of inspiration for creativity?
When a person knows a discipline (like product development or financial analysis) well, there seems to be an innate curiosity to find a better way to conduct that discipline. This motivation often comes from within – to find a better, more clever way to accomplish a task.
How can I learn to be more creative?
There are many heuristics, guides, and models for becoming more creative. A common theme of many of these models is to focus on an area in which you want more creativity, look for similarities & differences to your chosen area in other aspects of your work, and experiment freely. It also helps to have a supportive environment – boss, colleague, and even physical space with materials at hand for building physical models and for playing with cognitive ideas.
What if my boss or company does not support creative work?
Perhaps subsets of your work or smaller projects could provide a forum for creativity. Also, areas outside work – your home, hobbies, sports – may give opportunities for you to experiment with your creative ideas.
